The Green Apple Day of Service was started by the United States
Green Building Council as an effort to bring cleaner, greener, class room
environments to educational institutions.
CPTC students built and planted six raised vegetable gardens that
will be used to grow fresh produce for the on campus emergency food pantry run
by Phi Theta Kappa. Fresh greens will be grown all year long and help assist
with a healthy diet for students who are in urgent need.
The day was supported by the local business community. Bunce
equipment rental donated the use of a Dingo front loader for moving soil. TAGRO
of Tacoma donated potting soil for the boxes. Tomatoes, beets, carrots, kale,
dill, radishes, strawberries, peppers and assorted varieties of lettuce were
provided by L’arche Farms. The day would not have been complete without a lunch
supplied by Starbucks, Subway and the Washington State Community Green Chair,
Dan Smith, who is also the Sustainable Building Science instructor at CPTC>.
The project was planned and managed by Smith. Logistics and
recruiting were executed by Rhonda Cluff, Associated Student Government Lead
Peer Mentor. All pictures captured to record the ground breaking event were taken
by Lucy Pick, the CPTC Service-Learning Specialist.
With this great project, CPTC students contributed 45.5 hours of
service to the community. In the past year alone, students served 1,022.5 hours
– an amount calculated to be $20,664.75 worth of service injected
back into the community!
